Mary L. Gray is a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research andFaculty Affiliate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center forInternet and Society. Using the tools of anthropology and critical media stories, Maryexplored how material conditions and prevalent uses of technologiestransform people’s lives, particularly in places wheretechnological access is hard to come by. I invited Mary onto the Tech Talks Daily Podcast to speak abouther book “Ghost Work: How to Stop Silicon Valley from Building aNew Global Underclass,” which she co authored with computerscientist Siddharth Suri. In the book she explores the lives ofpeople paid to coach artificial intelligence and, more and more, serve as “humans in the loop” offering on demand facilities.
Hidden under the surface of the internet, lost in our wrong headeddebates about AI, a new menace is looming. I learn the way servicesdelivered by companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Uber canonly characteristic smoothly thanks to the judgment and adventure of avast, invisible human labor force. These people doing “ghost work” make the cyber web seem smart. They carry out high tech piecework: flagging X rated content material, proofreading, designing engine parts, and much more. An envisioned 8percent of Americans have worked at least once in this “ghosteconomy,” and that number is becoming. They typically earn less thanlegal minimums for traditional work, they haven’t any health advantages, and they can be fired at any time for any reason, or none.
There are no labor laws to manipulate this form of work, and theselatter day assembly lines draw in and all too often overwork andunderpay a surprisingly different range of staff: harried youngmothers, professionals forced into early retirement, recent gradswho can’t get a toehold on the classic employment ladder, andminorities shut out of the roles they want.
