In 1940 the grocery marketplace was a rough place for unbiased marketers. Strong competitors from national chains, higher prices from wholesalers and occasional margins left many families and independently owned agencies with boarded home windows. Determined to succeed against the competitors, 34 unbiased agents and Donald P. Lloyd, the then president of the Utah Grocers Association, joined together to combine their buying power and open a warehouse, most advantageous to the birth of AFS. Membership has since grown to greater than 400 dealers in eight intermountain states.
