At the early stages of teaching scholars the method of making connections to their prior expertise, the teacher models “considering aloud. ” The teacher reads a text to the class and talks via his or her considering method which will show students how to consider their thinking as they are reading. Slowly, after scholars have seen and heard the teacher using the method, they’re given the opportunity to share their experiences and considering. Finally, scholars make connections to texts independently.
Teachers can check in periodically to have scholars articulate their considering, on the way to track progress, spot problems, and intervene individually or behavior a mini lesson to reteach or move students ahead.
